OHINEMURI WANTS

P AERO A, Wednesday.
This morning- Mr McGowan, Minister of Mines, visited Waitekauri, and was interviewed by a deputation of leading citizens in reference to the erection of a. public battery at Waitekauri. Mr Draffin pointed out the great benefits which such an institution would confer on the district, and Mr Snow also spoke to the same effect. Mr McGowau said the Government were not in favour of erecting- sma'il batteries in each locality, and "he could not make, a.ny promises in the matter, but lie would make inquiries into the necessity for such a battery at Waitekauri and would then be able to judge better.
Mr McGowan also visited the Golden Cross township, and the difficulty of obtaining- telephonic communication was explained to him. The Minister expressed himself satisfied that the position of the township and the difficulty of delivery warranted .special concessions to anyone undertaking' the duties, and he promised to have the matter arranged.
This afternoon Mr McGowan returned to I'aeroa, aiy\ he left by train for the Thames, Whence he proceeds to C'oromande'l.
