MERCER.
Mr "Jack" Carnahan, who for some time past ha,' occupied the position of booking clerk and stationmaster's assistant at Mercer, is under orders to remove to Wellington. A large number of peoKpie assembled at the Garrick Hall here on Friday evening to bid him "good-bye," a social gathering being held for the purpose. On behalf of the subscribers, Mr Roberts, postmaster, made a .presentation to Mr Carnahan of a travelling bag, and spoke in eulogistic terms of the lastnamed gentleman's popularity and the esteem he has commanded during his stay in Mercer. Mr Carnahan, .in acr knowledgirig the gift, said he hoped he would make as many friends in his new quarters as he had done in Mercer. The remainder of the evening was snent in dancing, interspersed with songs and the discussion of refreshments supplied. by the ladies. Mr Carnahan takes. his departure amidst the regrets of all who have come in. contact with him here, both in his public and private capacities. Mr Jones, from Dannevirke, has succeeded Mr Seaborne, resigned as stationmaster here. ... ■ .-> -
