INTERPROVINCIAL CRICKET.

CANTERBURY V. WELLINGTON.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The interprovincial cricket match, Canterbury v. Wellington, was commenced on Saturday afternoon at Lancaster Park, when a cold wind was blowing across the ground, but the rain held oil. Barry captained the local team, and Tucker the visitors. Canterbury went in first, Sims and Wigley being the first pair to bat. Runs came slowiy at first, both men going steadily, and just after 50 was hoisted Sims lost his wicket, after compiling 20_ in good style. When Ridley joined Wigley, the spectators were treated to the most lively cricket of the day. iThe incomer hit round merrily, scoring rapidly off anything at all loose, and of the first 50 runs scored while he was at the wickets he claimed no less than 40. With two wickets down for 86, there seemed every prospect of a good stand, but then occurred one of the remarkable collapses so often seen in cricket. Callaway and Wigley looked like making a decent score, but three wickets were down for 108, and the rest of the men did i practically nothing, the innings closing for 146. Of the. four bowlers tried, Tucker proved particularly troublesome, none of the batsmen apearing to relish his slow i breaks.

Wellington started badly, Weybourne losing his wicket rather foolishly. He started to run after cutting Callaway, but Holdsworth did not respond, and the bails were off before Weybourne regained his crease. With only 13 on, Holdsworth was clean bowled, and the prospect was none too cheering. Hickson and Tucker, however, put a different complexion on the game, both of them hitting freely, though they were fortunate in being let off in the field early in the innings When time was called they had increased the score to 45. The scores are as under .- CANTERBURY.— First Innings.
