Mr Skerrett is applying for a writ of habeas corpus in the case of Lillywhite, suspected of the Colchester murder.
GISBORNE, this day. Mr Townley estimates his loss by fire at £700 above the insurance.

The City Council decided to take a vote of ratepayers on a proposal to borrow £4(1,000 for improving the water supply, and i: 15,500 to bo devoted to paying off the present loan. The estimated cost of the new works.is about £:K).000.
A young man, Richard Ward, was seriously injured yesterday afternoon by a fall of earth at a quarry at which he was working-. His injuries consist of severe cuts and bruises and a dislocated hip. Nearly twenty tons of . earth fell. Two other men working -with Ward had a narrow escape. OAMARU, this day. Part of the Kakanui fellmongery ; works, with contents, consisting of wool, skins and plant, was destroyed by lire this morning. The origin of the fire is unaccountable. The building was insured, but the amount could not be ascertained.
