STATE STEAM SERVICES.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—On picking up one of your contera.?]. poraries the other day, whose ideas are supposed to be quite up-to-date, I noticed a paragraph in which the Premier was severely rated for suggesting the Idea of. . a State S.S. Co. at the Commonwealth-: celebrations. I have no doubt King Dick will be very much taken aback should he see the aforementioned able paragraph, which, I think, is not very probable. The j argument in the said paragraph was that it was extremely immoral of the Premier to introduce State competition with prb j vate enterprise. What a fat man's argu- | ment for a professedly liberal organ to., uphold. The same able writer would have been virtuously indignant at the idea of - Rowland Hill's penny post, the coff- " struction of railways, State education,' etc., because private companies and mdl-" viduals had capital sunk in these enterprises. By all means let us have a i Government S.S, service. It is only a matter of time, at any rate, and the - sooner the better is the humble opinion; of R.M.K. 1
