INTERRUPTED TELEPHONES.

Sir,—lf is now nearly a week since Messrs L. D. Nathan and Co.'s lire, and during all that time nearly a hundred telephones, including those of some of the largest and busiest firms in Auckland, have been cut off. While passing the. scene of the fire to-day 1 noticed a very small gang of men leisurely engaged in putting up the wires again, seemingly in no hurry whatever. Had this happened in any other town I venture to say that within twenty-four hours after the tire the telephones would all have been in working order again, but in Auckland! . Is the Department going to compensate the unfortunate subscribers; or will it levy an additional subscription to defray the cost of a few additional men?—l am. etc., SUBSCRIBER.
