ARTILLERY ACCIDENT IN SYDNEY

FOUR GUNNERS INJURED,

SYDNEY, December 30,

The Royal .Field Artillery had gun drill in Moore Park this morning, and were firing* one of 'the 10-pouaiders brought out from England, when, for a reason unexplained, .the breech block drew out.

Sergeant Guippe was injured in the face and eyes, Gunner Tudor had Ms left, arm blown off below the elbow, Private Cole was injured in the face, and Gunner Tyler wns slightly in>> jnred. The first three were taken, to the hospital.

The injured men belong to the 10th Battery of the Royal Field Artillery. Flour shots had been fired. Tudor placed the fifth cartridge in the breech and Guippe rammed it home. Before the breech could be closed the explosion occurred. The suppesed cause is that the operations were carried out 'too qujckly, some burning fragments left from the previous shot igniting.

After the accident Tudor's arm was amputated close to the elbow. He also received injuries to his side and face.
