NEWMARKET.
The fortnightly meeting of the Xewmarfcet Borough Council was .held last evening, His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. McColl) in the cbalr. There were also present Messrs A. Seccombe. J. M. Laxon, F. Bennett, G. Smerdon, W. Smith, J. R. Caston, and W. Edgcrley. Very little bnsi-ness of importance was transacted. The Town Clerk announced that the rates for 1900----1901 had been collected with the exception of 3/2. The tender of Mr Wm. Morgan for dog collars at 6_d apiece was accepted. Mr J. G. Carr was re-appointed borough valuer for the ensuing year. Cr. Bennett reported that the new "drain in Huntly Avenue had been laid down and was answering all requirements, and that the 'new drain in York-street had boon completed. Accounts to the amount of i'36o 10/3 were passed for payment. The Mayor stated that the Mayor of Parnell had at his request consented to lend the Parnell street-sweeper to clean the Newmarket streets. The Town Clerk was granted leave of absence from December 23rd to Ja-nuary 3rd, 1901.
