NAPIER-STREET SCHOOL CONCERT.
The concert given by the Napierstreet public school in the Opera House last evening proved an unqualified success. The building was crowded to overflowing before 8 o'clock, many standing throughout the whole performance. The various items met with warm approval, being of a very high order of merit; in all the little actors were dressed to impersonate their parts; as for instance in "Caller Herrings," where little fisherwomen cried their goods and exhibited real denizens of the deep; While little fishermen cast the net and cleaned their hauls. The "nigger son-rs" were especially amusing. "Better than a pantomime," as one of the frequenters of the house said, the juveniles, blackened and fantasticallygarbed actors entering into the spirit of the thing with a vim and zest most entertaining. In another item a large array of youne: and charming nursemaids wheeled their infant charges in treble lines, ever intei-mingling, meanwhile chanting a pean in praise of their "brave soldier'boy." The dances by Miss Knight's pupils were extremely charming and graceful under the changing lights, while the infant swing songs and marches were very pretty. The gymnastic display was excellent; the bayonet drill by the cadet corps, dumbbells by girls m costume, and club swinging by elder girls, being very creditable. The club solo, by Mr. W. Russell, was a real exhibition of muscular suppleness. The various choruses rendered by the eirl pupils were especially good, Ihe boys; led by Master E. Purdie, were also very successful in. their negro songs and choruses. Master W. Harvey won warm commendations tor his singing of "The Lads in Navy Blue. A most enjoyable evening's entertamment was concluded by the tableau "Britannia and Her Daughters and the singing of the National Anthem. Owing to the large number for whom no accommodation could he found in the house, it has been decided to repeat the concert, with alterations to the programme, on Tuesday evening next.
