TRADE WITH SOUTH AFRICA.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—l notice that the Government have decided to call for tenders for a regular service between Isew Zealand and South Africa. How about the cost of freight?
General merchandise is at present con-; veyed from Melbourne or Sydney to Durban and Capetown at 35/ per ton of 40 e.f, and as no less than live lines keep up the run■n'ng, merchants can freight up every week. These boats run to London, Liverpool, and Glasgow, and of course can fill up with return freights. Unless we are prepared to pay an immense subsidy, I fear there will not be the slightest chance of getting other ■ than our regular direct boats to take up the ' runu'.ng. It would indeed be a far better policy if those interested in the trade were to arrange with the Union S.S. Co. to run " boats to connect with the Melbourne-Cape J steamers and to have frozen and cool chambers fitted up for our perishable produce.*I am, etc., H. JOHNSON.
