WOMEN'S POLITICAU'LEAGUE.

At a meeting of the Women's Political Lfague held- yesterday (Mrs Dewar in the chair),, the .following resolutions were passed:—(l) That the W. P. L. tnanKS Mr Flatman for moving for a return of the expenditure, etc., ; at. Be lamy s, and hopes he' will' persevere, until it is presented to the House, as this League considers it a scandal for our legislators to neglect to discharge their liabilities; (2) this meeting respectfully draws the attention of the Minister of Justice to the present degrading and useless methods of dealing with drunkenness, and begs to draw his attention to the case of Eliza Lestrange . (police report enclosed). This meeting strongly recommends an' inebriate farm, which should be made self-support-Zing; one year ; being the shortest period of residence on the farm; (3) re Stoke Orphanage—the resolutions passed at a meeting held 'at- Nelson were unanimously .adopted by the League, with the following addendum: That suitable men and women be appointed- as, inspectors to every in-stitution-subsidisecf by government, who shall have power to visit such homes at any time. The deputation appointed at •the' last meeting, to. meet the Hospital Board gave In-their report.

The weekly meeting of the Ponsonby Baptist Mutual Improvement Society was heid1 last evening, Rev. A. H. Collins in the chair. The question for discussion was.' "Should the State Legalise Gambling?" the- affirmative being taken by Messrs''H. Robinson and S. Hutchinson, and the negative by Messrs G. Carter and, R. ; Whaley. Upon We . 'question, being put to the vote, it wa? unanimously decided in the negative. There was' a crowded meeting at tile Christian Standard Band of Hope lnst evening Mr' C. D. Collier presided, and addresses were delivered by Messrs Greenwood find Jones, while items were rendered br Misses Wheeler, Marson.
