ALLEGED THEFT OP A BULL,

A Maori named Benjamin Marshall was indicted that between 10th January and 15th April; 1900, at Awaroa, near Glen Murray, he stole a bull, the property of John Brooks. There was a second count that accused had the bull in his possession, knowing it to 'be dishonestly obtained. Prisoner pleaded not guilty. He was defended by Mr C. J. Parr. Mr Tole prosecuted for tUie Crown. Mr Tole said it would be shown that accused had possession of the bull and that he exchanged it_ for a steer and gave him £1 in addition. Mr Brooks in evidence said he was manager of the -Waikat,o Riverside Estate, and lived near Church Hill, eight miles from Huntly. Mr McKinnon purchased the bull for him at a sale held on 21st June, 1899, and, it ran on his farm till August 11th. On May 27th last he saw the bull in Duffy's paddock at Pukerimu, and identified it at once. A number 'of . witnesses were examined, the case not being concluded when we went to press.
