LICENSING TEAM CABS.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—An impression has gone abroad that the City Council has lost considerable revenue through neglecting to license tram cars. Speaking from memory, I believe that I am correct in stating that such is not the case. Under the deed of agreement between the Council and the original Tram Company, a yearly rental of £200 was imposed, covering the license fees, which rent has been regularly paid. Of course the formal issue of licenses should have been continued for the purpose of keeping the Company within the power of the city by-laws and jurisdiction of the Magistrate's Court; but no monetary loss has been sustained by the neglect. It may now be a legal question whether the old order in this matter may have to continue while the present tram system is in operation. The new deed of agreement for electric cars Imposes a yearly rental of £400 which is now paid.— I am, etc., R.A.P.
