At the Paeroa Police Court to-day, before M.ssrs Cock and Hamilton, the following cases were dealt with:—Charles Wickland. charged with obtaining: £5 under false pretences from Miss Draflin, Waitekauri, was convicted and ordered to refund the £5, and was fined £2 and costs (14/), in default 1 month. Two little boys, aged 10 and 12 respectively, hailing from Waitekauri, were brought before the Bench on the charge of stealing and selling a horse. It appears these two hopefuls determined to have a holiday, and, with that object, they seized this horse, rode into Paeroa, and disposed of the horse for £2. They then took flrstclass tiskcts to the Thames, and put up at the best hotel there, where- they were interrupted by a visit from the police. After'hearing the statements of their fathers, they were ordered to come up for sentence if called upon during the next six months, and to pay £1 6/ costs. Albert Booth was charged with the theft of one spirit level, one plane and one steel set-square and two expansion bits. He pleaded guilty to the three informations and was sentenced to one month On each charge, sentences to run concurrently. * ' , . . The Paeroa School Committee have for some time been endeavouring to provide better playground accommodation, and about two years ago they got a piece of land adjoining the school ear-marked as a school reserve. Since the Government purchased the rights of Messrs Cassrell and Bennett in the township the Committee have renewed their efforts to have a decent playground provided, and on tho occasion of the visit of Mr Bagnall (Chairman of the Board of Education) to Paeroa recently, tho necessity for better accommodation was pointed out to him. As a result another application was sent in, and tho Chairman of the Committee has now received word that the excavation, levelling and formation of paths about the school will be carried out at once, at an estimated cost of £150. A public meeting was held in the Criterion Theatre last evening*, Mr Cock presiding, when It was decided to start a co-operative butchery in Paeroa, and £200 worth of shares were taken up in the room. The Pe-eroa Public Library has received a valuable addition to its list of books in the shape of a consignment from Meudy, London, valued at £25.
