At the inquest on the body of David S. Bowman, a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane, was returned. A three half-penny stamp is to- be added to those already in use. It will be mainly for newspaper postage. The design is patriotic, and will have reference to the contingents.
The Government; has accepted the service of a Highland Rifle Company here, but declined to accept two others.
The championship cricket matches being still unfinished, the Association has declared the Midland-Wellington game drawn, which makes the former club champion.

The.Very Rev. Dean Mahoney, who has just completed his silver jubilee sen-ice in connection with "St. Mary's Catholic Church, has been entertained at. a social and presented by his parishioners and citizens with an illuminated address and purse of eighty soys. At a gathering of the children of.St. Mary's schools the Dean was presented with an address and chalice by the pupils, and also with an address by the "Children of Mary" Society. Arch-* deneon Devy, vicar-general, and the Very Rev. Father Lewis, administrator of the diocese, represented the Archbishop, who was unable to attend. Miss Tendall, M.A., of Wanganui High School, has been appointed principal of the Nelson Girls' College. There were eighteen applicants.
INVERCARGILL, this day
A farewell social was tendered to Mrs .7. G. Ward at the Bluff last night. on the eve of her departure to take up her residence in Wellington. The Mayor presented Mrs Ward with a ring suitably inscribed as a token of esteem from* the ladies of the Catholic congregation.
