LONDON, May 3
The British advance in the direction of Brandfort, 35 miles north of the Free State capital, on the line of rail, is being1 pressed.
General Pole-Care.w marched northwards from Bloemfontein; General lan Hamilton's division from Glen Siding, 8 miles further north. General Wavell started from Karace Siding, and General Maxwells moved from Krantzkraal.
Accompanied by four batteries and two 4.7-inch guns, the Boers are being pressed back all along the front of the whole line.
General Hamilton dispersed the Boers at Hautnek. capturing- 2G, including a commandant.
The Boers admit 12 killed and 40 wounded in Monday's fighting.
The Foreign Legion suffered the worst.
Colonel Maximoff, a Russian, commanding1 the Legion, was wounded.
General Hamilton's forces are resting at Jacobsrush after a week of almost incessant lighting.
Private Keeble (Victorian Infantry) served -the 94-pounder. which fired 1567 rounds in the recent fight at Hautnek. This is equal to 78 tons of iron. Afterwards he fell and broke his arm.
Commandeering the- rebels' horses is proving an effective deterrent.
Lord Roberts leaves no horses to forage outside the camps.
