COROMANDEL, this day

: A meeting of the committee of the i Coromnndel Patriotic Fund was held jon Wednesday evening in the County i Chambers, Captain Swindley being ; chairman. Mr B. li. Johnson, secrej tary, presented the balance-sheet of ; the sums collected for the fund, which showed the receipts from the • concert and fireworks display and special donation to be £43 8/, and ; the shilling lists £17 2/, the total being £00 10/, which, after payment of printing and other expenses amounting to £8 15/, leaves a balance of £51 15/. This sum will be forwarded immediately to the treasurer of the : Auckland Patriotic Fund. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Johnson ; for his\ efforts on behalf of the fund.

At the Magistrate's Court today, before Mr R. S. Bush, S.M., a case was heard, Samuel Phair versus the Coromundel County Council and Robert Sadgrove. Mr Geo. Cruiokshank appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr C. R. Walker for the defendant Sadgrove. This was a claim under the Contractors and Workmen's Lien Act for £10 15/, for carting done for Sadgrove, who had a contract with the Council. The point was whether the plaintiff had a right to charge for going and coming to the work at Mercury Bay from Opitonui, the defendant contending that plaintiff should only be paid for the actual time he was working on the job. Several witnesses gave evidence, after which the Magistrate gave judgment for £9 2/G and costs.

Police v. J. 1). O'Connor.—ln this case the defendant, who is licensee of the Golconda Hotel, was charged before Mr Bush, S.M., with * allowing1 liquor to be consumed on his licensed premises on Sunday, Bth April last. Constable Law prosecuted; Mr F. E. Ba\ime appeared for the defendant. Several witnesses were examined. . The defendant admitted the 'sale. Mr Baume contended that under section 22, subsection 0. of the Alcoholic Liqiiors Sale Act, 1895, there had been no breach of law in this case, as the liquor was supplied at the request of a lodger, lie quoted the oase of White versus Neestor. The Bench dismissed the information.
