The Premier is expected back in Wellington to-night.

Some replies have been received to the circular telegram sent out by the Premier to members of Parliament inviting an expression of their views on the proposal to make a grant from the public fund in aid of the sufferers by the Ottawa (ire. Mr Atkinson, M.H.K., Wellington, thinks the. course proposed would create a

dangerous precedent, oilly to be. exercised in some great Jiupprial emergency. lie will not approve of the suggestion until he is in possession of further information in respect to the colony's financial position, and of Canada's competency to deal with the disaster. He suggests that Ministers wouliT attain the same end without strn'uul-.!;' the resources of the colony by openingl a public subscription list and heading' it themselves, which, as a famous humorist remarked, "is wrote sarcastic." Mr J. Hutcheson, another Opposition member, is distinctly of opinion that the Dominion Government is quite able to deal with all immediate distress. He therefore counsels waiting for further information before sending a sum of money which, to be adequate, must be large.

The local Sanitary Commissioners have condemned several more houses in Te Aro.
