ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the above Council was held in the Council Chamber last night. There were present: —His Worship the Mayor, Dr. W. P. Close-Erson, in the chair, Councillors Stotipe, Brown, Bradley, Yates, J. Shaldriek, McLeod, Hill.

Imprest Supply.—Mr S. J. Brookfield, the returning officer of Manukau district, wrote requesting that a sum of £50 as an imprest supply for the conduct of the licensing election be passed by the Council. The Mayor moved, seconded by Mrs Yates, that the amount of all accounts which were certified to and had been paid by the returning officer be refunded on application. This was agreed to. -

Thanks. —The acting town clerk wrote acknowledging the action of the Council in offering to assist the City Council with a ternpory supply of surplus water. They, however, had made arrangements for a temporary supply, and would, if necessity required it, accept the offer to the Council at a later date.

Footpaih Required.—Mr James W. Carr, secretary of the Mount Roskill Road Board, wrote intimating that his Board proposed forming a footpath from the Pah Road along the south side of the Mt. Albert Road|fto the Onehunga boundary, and requested that the Onehunga Council may see fit to carry it to the Onehunga main road. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Mr Hill, the letter was referred to the Streets Committee.

Offensive Drain. —The 'inspector o,f nuisance reported that a drain running from the property of Mr Farrell was in a bad state, and suggested that the drain be filled up unless Mr Farrell lay down drain pipes, and carry the water to the sea. As objection was made by the property owner, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Bradley, seconded by Mr McLeod, that the drain be immediately filled in under the supervision of the Streets Committee.

Bubonic Plague.—Mr H. W. Wilson, Town C erk of Auckland, addressed the following circular to the Council: —At a meeting of the local Board of Health for Auckland City, held last evening, the following resolution was carried: "That delegates from the Boroughs of Devonport, Onehunga, Grey Lynn, Parnell, -Newmarket, Birkenhead, the several road districts, and other outside Boards of Health be invited to meet delegates from this Board in Conference on Monday next, the 19th inst., in the City Council Chambers." May I ask if you will be kind enough to appoint delegates to attend, as the matter is of the greatest urgency. The Mayor pointed out that the circul_* had 011I3* come to hand that day, hen^e no delegates could be appointed. He mentioned, how-ever, that all the necessary steps had been taken by the Inspector to keep the town in a sanitary condition.

-Dredging.—The Mayor announced that when the Rotoiti was stranded in the harbour, he wired to the Minister of Marine requesting that the work passed by Government, that of dredging the harbour, should be proceeded with with the least, possible delay. It was now satisfactory to know that the dredge had left for Onehunga, so that the "obstacles complained of would shortly be removed.

The" -Mayor intimated that a large number of tenders foi* the removal of night soil and applications for the position of Inspector of Nuisances had been received, and he suggested that the applications be received and dealt with at next Monday's Committee meeting. It was resolved to accept a tender for the removal of night soil at next Monday's meeting, and that six .persons be selected for the position of Inspector of Nuisances, for confirmationn at the next ordinary general meeting*.

Finance. —The Town Clerk read the statement of finance, which showed all accounts to be in credit. Accounts amounting to £75 were passed for payment

Fencing.—-Mary Kemp wrote i*equesting that the reserve leased by her be fenced as early as possible.—Referred to the Reserves Committee to consider and report.

Mr Hill, a member of the Streets Committee ".tendered his resignation, and Mr McLeod was appointed to fill the vacancy.

Electric Trams. —The committee appointed to consider the application of Mr Coleman, re electric trams, brought up then report, and after discussion it was'resolved to refer the matter back to the committee for further consideration, and report at nextmeeting. Stone-breaking Machine. —On the motion of Mr Shaldrick, the Streets Committee were instructed to take into consideration the advisability of purchasing or hiring a stone-break-ing machine, for the purpose of providing blue metal for the streets.
