CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON.

(By Telegraph.— Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, ibis day

At a meeting of local bodies Dr. Martin, the Health Officer of the city, reported that precautions should be taken to kill rats on board the steamers before they could get to shore. He considered quarantine unnecessary, as the passengers would develop any symptoms of plague during the voyage and the risk was greater when crowded together in a small area. - They should be allowed to land on giving a bond to report themselves to the Health Office, and any who refused could be quarantined.

The meeting decided to send a cop3r of the report to the Government and the shipping companies. Dr. Martin's idea is to pump carbonic acid ga.s into the holds and thus kill oft' the rats.

Regarding the despatch of a medical man to Sydney to study tbe bubonic plague, Die matter has been under the consideration of the Government for some time, but it is not likely that a doctor will be sent until there has been received the bacteriological report by Mr Gilruth, Chief Government veterinary surgeon, who is now in Sydney.
