PUBLIC SCHOOLS SPORTS.

The second unnual sports meeting of the Auckland Public Schools' Amai tear Athletic Association-, took place i yesterday afternoon in the Domain 1 Cricket. Ground, and was in every way

a pronounced success. A very large : attendance of children, parents, and 1 friends awarded the efforts of the promoters, and in Che middle of the ! afternoon the slopes of the ground I presented a very bright and pietuI resque appearance. Tiie events were ! run oil" punctually, and the whole ! meeting was splendidly managed, the ! energetic secretary, Mr F. J. Unison,

and Aii- G. Squirrel (chaiman of tlie City Schools Committee), the president, being- especially worthy of mention for their hard work in promoting the luceess of the meeting. During the afternoon Mr It. Hobbs (chairman) and Mr V. E. Rice (secretary) of the Education Board were present. ] The events were nearly all keenly contested, and several good finishes I were witnessed. The hero of the I meeting wa.s (i. Hill, of (Jrafton Road school, who won half a dozen events, and practically secured the banner a second time for his school. Although Hill was somewhat on the large size in comparison with his opponents, yet he ran nicely, a.nd should be heard of again. Another promising boy is K. lleald, who came second in the mile walk, and showed a most taking style. Hunter's band was in attendance during the afternoon, and Aliss Squirrcll, assisted by other ladies, kindly provided afternoon tea. Chapman. Miss M. Stilt was Queen of the May, and the girhs were prettily attired in white, with pink sashes and harts to match. Japanese Medley.—This was a novel and pretty display by •twenty-four girls from the Reresford-st. school. The £j r i s were dressed in full Japanese costume, and carried Japanese umbrellas, and the effect was very artistic. The girls went through some pretty evolutions under .Miss Mcllhone, who deserves great credit for her efforts in presenting- such a. picturesque exhibition.
