PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES IN VICTORIA AND TASMANIA.
WELLJNGTON, this day.
The Premier has received the following' from the Premier oi' Tasmania with reference to the precautionary measures taken there in connection with the bubonic plague:—"lluferring to .your cable of the J2th, re precautionary measures respecting1 passengers- from Sydney, we are so far notquarantining.vessels from Sydney. All passengers are medically inspected, and vessels are not allowed to come within 3ft 9in of the wharf, and regulations similar to those in force in Victoria have been put in force here to prevent, as far as possible, any rats getting" on shore from the vessels. Lights are, burning' all night, and special Watchmen are kept. No cases of bu-
bonic plague have occurred in Tasmania.— (Signed) N. E. Lewis."
The following- cablegram has been
received by Mr Seddon from the Premier of Victoria: —"."Referring1 to your telegram of yesterday, re bubonic plague, this Government g'lady acquiesces in your suggestion for medical examination at the border from New South Wales, and directions 'have been given for this action to be taken forthwith.
The s.s. Mararoa, which has been at the quarantine station since Monday morning last, will bo released to-morrow, and will then come up to the wharf. The passengers are whiling away the time with boating1, fishing, concerts, etc.
The effect of the quarantine regulations upon the travelling public may be judged from the fact that the s.s. Westrnlia, a very popular boat, which left Sydney on Wednesday last, has but eight saloon and nineteen steerage passengers.
