THE KAPOWAI BLOCK.
VALUE OF THE ORE
A parcel of ore from Kapowai No. 1, or Meikte's prospecting area, was forwarded to Messrs Fraser and Sons, Stanley street, for treatment. The ore was first crushed and put through the roller mill. Parcel X was 42 bags of ore, which gave an average assay of £30 17/5-1, of which £30 7/6 was gold, and 9/11A silver. The parcel weighed 3Sc\vt gross, Jess bags, samples, and 6 per cent, of moisture, leaving 34cwt 6qrs 51bs. The ore was treated by pan amalgamation, with the following result: —18oz lldwts igrof bullion, value .£2 6/0} per oz: total value, £42 14/2. This was from a large reef recently cut in the Kapowai No. 1, and was sent up to test its value. As a matter of fact, this ore has yielded much' more bullion than was expected. Bated per ton, the foregoing would be £24 10/0* per ton by pan amalgamation, or 79.3 per cent., The parcel marked XI. was taken from a small roef varying from 6 to 18 inches in width. The 20 bags of ore gave an average assay value per ton of £8 6/7. The ore yielded by pan amalgamation £5 2/6, or, if rated per ton, £6 4/3A, being 74.5 per cent, of the assay value. The ore in both cases carries considerable iron, presenting difficulty in clean amalgamation. Mr Fraser recommends treating the ore in a pan with a continuous overflow to carry away tlie iron salts.
