THE FORMAL OPENING

The Government battery at Mahakirau was formally opened during the month by Mrs C. O'Brien in the presence of a large number of both ladies and gentlemen interested in. mining, who journeyed from Coromandel and Mercury Bay and other districts. The battery throughout is of modern construction and thoroughly up to date in every respect, the whole being enclosed in an iron building 20ft by 40ft. There are a number of claims in the vicinity of the battery, including the Homeward Bound, Jubilee, Peep o' Day, aud Day Dawn, all having large parcels of good ore awaiting crushing.

The battery was erected by the Government solely to assist, prospectors in this district, which is well known to bear gold, it having been discovered here twenty-five years ago.
