ROWDYISM IN KARANGAHAKE.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
XAEANGAHAKE, this day
Christie Keogh, the victim of the assault at Karangahake last Saturday night, is not dead as has been reported, but is getting on all right. Several other rows took place the same night, one man being followed' in to n boarding house and kicked in his room. The police have the names of several ringleaders and intend taking action to stop such disgraceful scenes.
A boy six years of age, son of a lumper named John Brown, living in Greystreet, has been reported to the police as missing. The boy is of dark complexion, with dark hair, and had on a light-coloured suit of clothes. Replying to the Chamber of Commerce deputation yesterday on the subject of precautions against the Bubonic plague, the Hon. Mr Ward said the whole question had been considered by the Government and the Medical Board at Wellington, and the Board there had advocated very drastic measures. The Government, however, had taken upon themselves the responsibility of. not adopting these extreme means, because they hoped to accomplish their purpose by what they have already done. It is a matter which had engaged, and still is engaging, the very serious consideration of the Government, and they would not shrink from any measure which was deemed absolutely necessary to prevent the inception of the disease in New Zealand. Mr Iredale is opening a branch shop in Karangahape Road, where he begins a sale of Daley's stock on Friday morning.
