THE GREYMOUTH FATALITY.

MARTIN' CHARGED WITH MURDER

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

GREYMOUTH, Saturday.

Particulars of the row which led to the death of the man Carew are now available., About half-past one o'clock a row occurred at the Union Hotel over a game of dice. Six were playing. The . disputants, P. Carew and W. Martin, called each other liars, and adjourned to the street to settle the matter with their fists. Both were the worse of liquor, though not lieljilessly. drunk. After a. few minutes' fighting Carew said he had enough, and the contestants separated. Carew afterwards went, out of the hotel, feeling unwell, and as he did not return w rithin half an hour, his mates went to look for him. They found him in an unconscious condition a, couple of hundred yards away. He was prostrate on the footpath. Medical aid was immediately sent for, but Carew did not regain consciousness, and died about nine o'clock. He .was a single man, a miner, a.nd a native of Ireland, aged about 30.,';-.,

. At.the. inquest.the medical evidence .was to the effect that death was caused, by. a,, rough fracture of .the skull, but it was improbable that it could have been due to a blow from a fist. It was likely the fracture took place through deceased's head coming my .contact,. with the pavement or stones on the road. The jury, after hearing evidence all day, returned, a verdict, that deceased met his. death through fracture of the skull, but that there, was not sufficient evidence to say what was the cause. The police arrested Martin. . and charged him with murder, after the inquest. He was admitted to bail In two sureties of £50,:..and himself in '£100. Tho case comes oh again'on Tuesday. .
