PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL AT HUNTLY
•A well attended meeting of the residents of Huntly and surrounding districts was held on Monday evening to consider the advisability of holding sports to augment the war fund. As it is the intention of their Excellencies Lords Ranfurly and Beauchamp to paY a visit to King Mahtita at the end of the month', it was deemed advisable by the meeting to take advantage of the great crowds of natives and Europeans who will be in Huntly at that time, and endeavour to raise a considerable sum for patriotic purposes. The matter was taken up enthusiastically, and strong committees were formed to superintend the getting up of sports, concert and ball. Never before has a gathering in the colony been under the patronage of a king and two governors, and the carnival at Huntly, to be held about the 28th of the month, bids fair to be-one of the largest gatherings ever held in the Waikato. Many hundreds of Maoris will be at the king's settlement across the river at that time, and visitors to Huntly will have an opportunity of seeing such an array of old'chieftains as is seldom seen nowadays. Maori 1 bands from Tauranga, King Country land the Lower Waikato will be iiv attendance and rentier a continual [ strain of music. To enable Auckland j and Waikato visitors to attend the ! carnival excursion trains will run to Huntly, and those who venture out will be rewarded for their trouble, as the committee will leave no stone unturned to make visitors enjoy themI selves. An excellent sports proI gramme has been arranged, consisting of polo tournament, native, cycling, running and canoe races, along numerous other attractions, as seen in advertisement. A concert and , ball will close the day's enjoyment.
