VOLUNTEER NOTES.

GOVERNMENT PRIZE MEDAL COMPETITION. The annual rifle competition for the Government • prize medals took place on Saturday afternoon, at the Akaraua Rifle Club's range, Avondale. Out of 58 who sent their names in to the Brigade Office only 29 competed. The competition was open only to those volunteers who had qualified as marksmen for the year 1809-1900, and the conditions of the firing were: it) shots al each range of 300 yards, ,100 yards, and 700 yards, kneeling at the 300 yards distance, and in any military position at (he longer ranges. Firing commenced at 12.15 p.m. and concluded at: six o'clock. Private J. Carlson, of the Victoria Rifles, came, first, wiili a total of 100 points out of a possible 120. Private Tobin and Sergt. Kietschmar, also of _ the Victoria Ritles, iiiled second and third places respectively. Major .Morrow, of the district staff, supervised the firing, assisted by Sergteant-Major Kearsley of -the "A" Battery.
