BOROUGH MEETINGS.

DEVONPORT.

Last- evening the adjourned meeting Of the Devonport Borough Council was held. There were present: Crs. 0. Mays, W. Handley, G. A. Creeth, E. W. Alison, M. Niccol, J,. Dunning, and R. Duder. In the absence of the Mayor Cr M. Niccol was voted to the chair.

Correspondence—Letters were read from Mr Pegler in reference to deposit for formation of Glen Road, and from Mr Hodge, of Kerr-street, desiring water to be put on his premises. Mr Hodge complained of gorse at Mozley •Vvenue, in danger of being fired. It was resolved that the owner ot the allotment be written to. Messrs Derore and Cooper asked that Council's seal be a (fixed to agreement for No. 5 drainage contract. Letters, reports, and by-laws were received from Adelaide and Melbourne on drainage matters, in reply to letters from the Devonport Borough, and were acknowledged with thanks. Mrs Clilcot complained of a fowl-house near her dwelling. She having sickness iv her house, and the fowls crowing, and the ducks quacking, together with the offensive smell, constituted a great nuisance. The Sanitary Inspector was instructed to see to the matter. Mr R J. Roberts stated that nightsoil was being placed on a paddock close to Ins dwelling on the Lake Road, and was exceedingly objectionable. The Town Clerk was asked to write to the nightsoil contractor to abate the nuisance. Permits.—Permits for buildings were granted 'to Messrs Craig Bros., for the erection of a large dwelling for Mr John Frater at Stanley Point, also to Mr James M. Logan for the erection of a hall at the corner of Calliope Road and High-street, to be used for religious purposes. Mr Logan also asked for a footpath to a new house just completed in Russellstreet, and this was granted. Sanitation.—Some strong complaints were made of sanitary matters in the Domain which needed immediate iltention. The Foreman of Works .v.-is instructed lo see to it at once. Water.—ln the Engineer's monthly report he stated that during the past month he 'had pumped 3.581,500 gallons of water. Some of the Councillors called attention to the leakages that were taking place, for the wafer pumped was far in excess of the needed requirements. Bathing Shed.—Mr Taylor, of the Auckland Harbour Board, at, the request of the Council, suggested various improvements to i'lie bathing-shed, at an estimated cost, of £24. It was decided to go on with the work.
