BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Education Board was held this afternoon,'Mr R. Hobbs.presided, and there wene also present, Messrs J. Blades, R. Farrell, Bagnall, J. Muir and Dr. A. McArthur. ""■ '

Chairman's Report.—The chairmau's report stated that the Papakura school had been closed for two days owing to the illness of the teaching staff. The No. 1 and No. 2 schools at Turanga Creek had been closed for a week owing to the prevalence of sickness among the scholars. The resignation of Miss D. Ponsford, relieving teacher, had been received. Dr. M. H. Payne had resigned his office as medical examiner of candidates for employment in the Thames district.

Scholarships. —Arrangements were made for holding the senior and junior scholarship examinations as follow: —Senior: On Monday, 18th December and four following days, at Auckland University College, Waiokaraka School, Thames and Public School, Whangarei. Junior: On Tuesday, 19th December, and two following days at Wellesley-street School, Auckland; Waiokaraka School, Thames; School, Hamilton West; School, Whangarei.

Teachers' Selection Committee.— The Teachers' Selection Committee recommended:—"!. That the following appointments should be authorised by the Board; Mr 'W. F. -Dean to be teacher of Otakeo school from January 1900; Mr H. A. Darrow to be relieving teacher from January 1900. 2. That the names, and qualifications of the following candidates for the headmastership of the school Te Awamutu, be submitted to the School Committee for their consideration: —Mr H. W. C. Philips, Mr J. S. Colhoun, Mr J. S. Phillips, Mr H. E. Forde, Mr G. W. Rapsoh, Mr W. J. Gatenby, B.A. 3. That, the names and qualifications of the following teachers be submitted to the. Coromandel School Committee for the selection of ,an assistant master:—Mr J. C. Mill, Mr A. H. Gatland, and Mr R. J. Corbett. 4-. Your committee submit a letter from the Karangahake District School Committee .asking" for' other names to be submitted for the position of head teacher of the Owharoa school, and recommend that the committee be acquainted with the prior claims of the teacher nominated by the Board for this appointment. 5. You committee submit a letter received from the Te Kowhai School Committee recommending the appointment of a teacher of lower grade than that of the teacher nominated by the Board for appointment to the school, and recommend that the Board should adhere to its proposal, and that the School Committee should be furnished with a full explanation of the matter. 6. Your committee recommend that the following qualified candidates should be placed on the list for employment as pupil teachers when their services may be required:—Andrew Bullians, Percy R. Burton, Frederick E. N. Downard, Thomas Finch, Alfred N. Jowitt, Charles Roberts, William H. Smith, Evelyn C. Burnard, Ethel B. Caddy, Janet L. Crawley, Ella Greenwood, Ellen A. Nutsford, Bertha L. Rees, Florence M. Waddingham, and Gertrude M. Worrall.

Finance Committee.—The . committee recommended payment of the following accounts:—Board fund, £6519 7/; building fund, £164 17/11.
