For a coiiiple p-J' days the wind has been blowing- strongly from the north east to the east,.and during last night it increased to a strong easterly, gale, raising a considerable.sea in the harbour and. along the. East.Coast, causing detention to coastal vessels. . The s.s. Wellington .had" a. long and rough passage .dp.vvn .from Whangarei-. this morning. The .Clansman left Russell for .Auckland, but.had-to under the lee of the -Heads through stress of. weather, being unable- to malce headway, against the heavy seav The Northern S.S. Company have abandoned ,the trip of the Clansman to Tauranga to-night, and that of. the Mui-itiii to' Mercury Bay. The ■departure of., the schooner Waimana fo>Whakatane has been postponed until noon to-morrow, and that of the s.s. Chelmsford for Whakatame uttt.il 8 o'clock to-night. /
The fishing boat Nukumea, which was anchored off Mechanics' Bay, ran ashore on the breastwork near Mr D. Goldie's mill, and had her mast broken short off, and her sides badly st rained.
