VALUELESS CHEQUES.

Accused was charged that on January '30th he did with intent to defraud obtain of and from one James McLeod the sum of 10s by means of a valueles. cheque dated January 20th, 1899. James McLeod, licensee of the Star Hotel, Karangahape Eoad, stated that on January 30th his barman gave him a cheque for £1. Witness lodged it at the I\ rewton branch' of the Bank of New Zealand, but it was returned marked "No account."
The barman stated that he had given Bradley 10s on the cheque in auestion.
" Alexander Craig, teller of the New. ton branch of the Bank of New Zealand, and H. D. Tovey, ledgerkeeper at the Bank of New South Wales also gave evidence. The latter witness, in answer to a question by the Bench, stated that since Bradley and Co.'s account at the bank was closed half a dozen cheques had been drawn on the bank in the name of Bradley and Co. and dishonoured.
Acting-Detective Kennedy deposed as to the arrest of Bradley, who was then formally committed for trial. The hearing of a third.charge of false pretences against the accused is proceeding. The case is proceeding.
