LACROSSE,

Although it was not too favourable an afternoon on Saturday from a weather point of view, yet the full number of players mustered at Stichbury's Paddock. Capt. Broughton let the Bed Sashes into the field, while Vice-Capt. Bradley was at the head of the All Whites. Richardson (Beds) and Coslett (Whites) faced off, the latter obtaining possession passed out to Caallis, who shot across to Ward, and'the ball was soon down at the Reds' goal, but the Sashes, by a clever piece of defence work, transferred to the other end of the ground. Open play, -with some fine long passes, left Noton in possession, and he scored, first blood for Whites. Faced off again, and after a short spell of loose scrimmages, the bail reached Noton's cross, and he popped in a neat one, adding another goal to the Whites' score. Off again, and for some time there was no particularly good individual play, but ultimately, by the aid of Eichardson, Fenn, and Hickson, the ball was passed right in front of the Whites' goal, and Morrin, putting it through, scored Red Sashes' first point. A moment later Noton was given another chance and put up his third goal. Another goal to the credit^ of each side was registered before the whistle went for half time. On resuming play, after a pretty piece of combined passing on the part of Reds, Hickson added to the scores for his side. Whites now played up, "feeding" Noton in great style, and goal after goal was registered. Broughton and Anderson had stacks of defence work to do. Some of the former's long throws gave the Reds chance after chance, but there was no good attack man, and Herrold and Owen's defence in front of Whites' goal was very strong, time and again saving what looked like a certain score. Eventually, however, through a quick pass by Hickson, Cook and Morrin dribbled the ball through. This was Reds last effort, their opponents scoring twice before the close of the play, Noton securing each of them. The game ended: Whites 10 goals to Reds 5. The losing side must have made a far better fight of it if there had been a good attack player in their team. Mr Major acted as referee and gave every satisfaction.
