NORTHCOTE SLAUGHTERHOUSE.

A petition was received by the YVaitemata County Council to-day from seventy-four of the residents and ratepayers oi1 Northcote objecting to the erection of the proposed slaughterhouse on Captain Slattery's property. The petition set forth that the slaughterhouse was elo.se to a number of residences "and a bakery and would prove a nuisance. It was also slated that the drainage would run into Kauri Gully, and would contaminate the creek.

A report favourable to the slaughterhouse was received from Dr. Walker.

Mr M. McGregor, solicitor, appeared on behalf of Mr Elgin, who proposes to build the slaughterhouse, lie stated that the drainage would not run into the gully, but that it would be conducted into a zinc tank, which would be emptied daily and used as manure. The floor oi' the house would be of concrete, and there would be no nuisance. There was no slaughterhouse in the district, and all meal, liad to be brought over from Auckland.

Mr Jackson spoke on behalf of a deputation of twelve of the petitioners. He said that the petition was signed by four-fifths of the residents? of the vicinity, and stated that the slaughterhouse would depreciate the value of the properly near by and would cause a nuisance. One erected a short time ago at Northcote had become such an intolerable nuisance that it had to be closed.

The matter was deferred until the afternoon.
