SUICIDE OF AMAORI
PAEROA, this day.
An inquest was held yesterday at Okauia, near Matamata, before Mr Forrest (Coroner), into the circumstances attending the death of a Maori named Te Whatarangi, who was found shot through the head. The Maori had left a letter to his people notifying1 his intention to commit suicide. The evidence showed he had procured a gun, tied a handkerchief to the trigger and to one toe of his right foot, placing the muzzle under his jaw. Death was instantaneous. A verdict was returned "That deceased shot himself while temporarily insane." Mr Guilding interpreted. Constable Wild represented the police.
