THAMES NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The Thames Mutual Improvement Society met on Thursday evening in the Pollen-street Lecture Hall. "Trial by Jury—Breach of Promise—"Molly Merry Maid versus Thomas Brown," was the subject for the evening, and resulted in the jury bringing in a verdict for the defendant, Brown. There was a large audience, which. fully appreciated the fun, the speeches of Messrs Kelly and Foster in particular causing much amusement. There was a collection during the evening, the proceeds of which (£1 7/G) will be handed over to the Hospital Fund.

The Thames "Rep." team to play Ohinemuri on Saturday has been chosen,-and is as follows: —Back, Jackson; three-quarters, R. McGregor, C. McLean, and Buck-land; five-eighths, 0. Kilfey; half, J. Coote; forwards, Johnston, J. Laing, C. McGregor, J. Swindley, Cantley, Cunningham, S. Smith, Spinks and Cameron. But for accidents Douslin and McGregor would have been chosen. The team is a good one and seems to give satisfaction.

Mr Consterdine,'the well-known musician, is about to leave the Thames in order to rejoin his family in Australia. To mark the sense of their regret at his departure his pupils assembled at, the house of Mr J. E. Coney and presented him with a farewell address and a handsome Gladstone bag.
