AN EXTRAORDINARY CASE.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

CAMBRIDGE, this day.

Tangi Haere was to-day charged with stealing a bay mare from Wm. Eing, of Hinuera, about 20th March, 1897. It was proved that accused stole the horse, swopped it with Keri Waru, who in turn swopped it to young' Callaghan, at Olcoroire, who sold it fo a man named Stanley. The last mentioned visited Ring a few weeks ago, when the owner recognised his mare and informed the police. The matter g-ot talked about, when accused, it is alleged, again stole the mare, taking it from Stanley's stable, and thinking to destroy evidence ,- hid it in the swamp. When arrested by the police he admitted the theft, and took them to where the mare was hidden. The case was proved by Ken Waru, John Callaghan, Arthur Stanley, W. Ring and Constable Cahill, and accused was committed for trial. Tangi Haere was further charged with cruelty to the mare by tying it up in a swamp in such a position that it was not able to move, and leaving it so for a week. When rescued the mare was partially paralysed. He pleaded guilty, and for this offence got two months' hard labour.
