GISBORNE^PARK^STBEPLECHASE

GISBORNE, Thursday. Glorious weather prevailed for the second day of the Glsborne Park Steeplechase Meeting. The following are the results—: Glsbomo Park Steeplechase.—This race was a chapter of accidents. Blackberry, Kaitoa, Rifle, and Dingo fell the first time round, and after pasing the stand the second time Rifle fell again at the hurdle .bringing down Blackberry also. Kaitoa was left alone In the running, the fallen horses were caught, and the riders both being unhurt were helped into the saddle again. Kaitoa had by this time a lead of a quarter of a mile, and seemed a certain winner, and his rider eased him up to a canter. Rifle again baulked at the next obstacle, but Blackberry got over. At the last hurdle Kaitoa refused, but in being put at the obstacle a second time he got over, and as he still had a lead of over 30 lengths from Blackberry, a victory for him seemed to be well assured. Blackberry here came very fast, and Goodwin made a desperate effort to close up the gap, and raced the Gladiator gelding at the last jump at top. Kaitoa had six or seven lengths lead of the favourite after the last hurdle was passed, but Goodwin, persevering with his mount, crept up yard by yard, and 50 yards from home was on terms, and lasting out in splendid manner, won by a couple ol lengths, amidst intense excitement. The rider and horse were loudly cheered. Time 7m 13s. There were 410 investors on the machine, 137 on the winner, ana the dividend was £2 7/. Upon weighing in Goodwin received a great ovation. Hack Handicap.—Craftsman 1, Virgin 2, Dreyfus 3. Also started: Sable Cloua and En Hakore. Dividend, £3 (>/. Tally-ho Steeplechase.—Quantock 1, Bushwhacker 2, Fly 3. Tommy, Pharaoh, and Peter fell. Tommy fell at the last hurdle, and rolled on his rider, Mr FranK Evans, who was severely shaken. Dividend £8 9/. Final Handicap.—Recruit 1, Crusade 2, Canopus 3. Dividend £4 12/During the day £2534 was passod through the totaltsator, making £4890 for the meeting.
