COROMANDEL NEWS

(Prom Our Own Correspondent.)

COEOMANDEL, Wednesday.

A unique entertainment in aid of the Church of England funds was held in the Caledonian Hall, Coromandel, last night. The attendance was large despite the inclement weather, which spoke volumes for the attractiveness of the programme, which was a varied one, including several sketches, charades, and tableaux. Amongst those who assisted to make the concert such a decided success were: Mrs Metealfe, who sang with considerable taste and expression "Island of Dreams." receiving a well merited encore; Miss Helma Prazer sang "Asthore" very successfully. The principal feature of the programme was Miss Aland Howard's (Auckland) rendering of "The City by the Sea," the vocalist having- to respond to an enthusiastic encore, contributing "Love Tide.'1 In the second part Miss Howard sang "Cara Mio," and for the encore "When the Heart is Young." Miss Eva Bullen of Auckland contributed a recitation, "Jealous Peterkin Peep", (encored). Mr Bert Williamson was heard to advantage in "The Viking," being deservedly ° encored, and responded with "What Noble Joys." Mr H. ITouchen sang "The Deathless Army," having cornet and kettledrum obligate He also sang "Song of Sleep" in a pleasing manner. Mrs J. Swindley played pianoforte solo; and the Misses 'Frazer a pianoforte duet. An itr-ms that caused a good deal of merriment was "Susie Oo,"' sung as a duet by two Maori juveniles.
