(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

STRATFORD, this day

A public meeting held in connection with the Prohibition Convention last night was very lively. The hull was densely packed. The speakers were the Revs. Isitt, Dukes and Hutson. Mr'Paull, the New Plymouth brewer, ascended the platform and spoke in reply amid considerable interruption ut times, the New Plymouth people resenting his statement re the Rev. Mr Garland. One one occasion, order being restored, Mr Paull challenged the Rev. Mr Jlutson to prove that prohibition is in accord with Scripture. Mr Hutson at once challenged Mr Paull or any person .chosen by him as his (Mr Paull's) representative to debate the question publicly on any platform in the North Island that prohibition of the liquor tratllc is in accord with the teachings of the Old and New Testaments. Mr Paull accepted the challenge. The Rev. Hutson is the same gentleman who debated the question of conditional immortality in the Theatre Royal in Auckland in August, ISS3.
