WELLINGTON, this day PETITIONS.

Mr Cadrrian to-day • presented a petition from Edward Lambert, of Parawai, Thames, praying for relief in consequence of being deprived of one month's pension under the Old Age Pension Act.

THE TAILORING TRADE

Mr Lawry presented a petition from the master tailors operative tailors and tailriresses, stating that by reason of the disparity in the factories log and the order tailoring log. amounting to from 300 to 490 per cent, in favour of the factories, the order tailoring trade, has been injuriously 'affected. which together with the system of division of labour enables the factories to turn out. suits in an incredibly short space of time and at a nominal cost. The petitioners suggest the protection of the order tailoring from unfair competition, that both branches should be registered, those making up clothing 1o order and paying the tailors and tailoresses logs be registered as merchant tailors and restricted to making clothes to order only, those making up goods for stock and paying the factory log be registered as readymade clothiers and restricted from making up goods to order either by the system known as chart or any other form of measurement, thus enabling the employees in the order tailoring trade to earn an honourable living. CHINESE GAMBLING. Mr Smith will ask the Premier whether his attention has been drawn to the recent Chinese gambling cases in Christchureh, and whether he . Avill cause a magisterial inquiry to be held (1) into the alleged overcrowding of thirty-two Chinese and four Eurqpeans into a small cell, and (2) the statement that the prisoners received insufficient food and bedding while in such cell, and other matters in connection with the case.

VARIOUS QUESTIONS.

Mr Taylor will ask the Minister for Railways whether the locomotive engines imported from America during the past year have proved as capable as engines of English or local manufacturers.

PROPOSED INNOVATION IN THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

To-day the Hon. J. D. Orrnond, the Hon. Dr. Grace, and the Hon. Mr Bonar strongly advocated the abolition of the present practice of suspending all business in the Council during a debate on a no-confidence motion in the Lower Chamber. The Minister for Euducation said he was merely following the precedent handed down to him, but he would be glad to give the Council an opportunity of discussing the proposed innovation.

THE AUCTIONEERS BILL.

The Auckland auctioneers are petitioning' the House against the passage of the Auctioneers Amendment Bill on the ground that there are no such restrictions to trade in any other part of the civilised world as those proposed under it, and that the restrictions to trade suggested would do very great injury to the people of the colony, as its provisions would greatly hamper the freedom of trade.
