DUNEDIN, Wednesday
A meeting1 of the newly formed Council of the Christian Churches was held to-night. The Rev. J. Gibb was appointed president. A number of resolutions were carried, to the following effect; —"That in view of the notorious and most deplorable evils of the drink traffic, as at present carried on in Dunedin, and the manifest inability to hold in check much less to suppress those evils, without committing itself to approve of prohibition in the abstract, the Council deems it desirable and necessary, in the present distress, to adopt a platform of no license and take the necessary steps to give effect to this decision, especially in connection with the approaching" election of Parliamentary representatives and local option vote. It was decided to take over the work of the Anti-Gambling League and carry it on.' It was resolved to appoint a committee to investigate the question of social purity with a view to directing, the rotion of the Council, and especially to inquire and report on the matter of curfew legislation." A motioruand amendment were proposed on the subject of religious instruction in schools, but it was eventually decided to adjourn consideration for 3 month, a committee being- appointed to confer with the Executive of the Council.
