AUCKLAND RACING CLUB AUTUMN MEETING.

JJOTES AND ANTICIPATIONS -OF

MONDAY'S RACING,

There will be high, carnival at Ellerslie on Monday next, when the Auckland Racing Club-hold the first day's racing of the Autumn fixture. With the exception of the Hurdle Kace, the events of the programme have filled well, and some interesting racing may confidently be looked forward to. Mr Hill, the caretaker, has the lawn and surroundings looking at their best, and with fine weather there will no doubt be a large gathering of holiday makers on' the course. The catering will be in the hands of Mr Thos. McEwin. Trains will leave the Auckland station for the course every few minutes from 10 a.m. till 12 -noon, and after that hour as required. The "first event is timed to start at 12 noon. My notes and anticipations of the various races on the programme: — TRADESMEN'S HANDICAP of lOOsovs; 1 mile and a furlong. st lb st lb Swordfish 11... 8 10- Anita 7 4 Tauhei 8 8 Hylas 7 2 •Admlr'l Hawke 8 4 Donneraile .... 7 2 Porangi Potae 7.7 Mantle 7 0 Merry Maid.... 7 C Boadicea 610 Straybird 7 5 Canopus 6 7 St. Lawrence.. 7 5 Tauhei is looking just a trifle light, but I think she will be found equal to disposing of the opposition, and of the others commend me to the chance of Donneraile. NORTHERN CHAMPAGNE STAKES of 30050V9. Six furlongs. . stlb Mr. J. Chaafe's b c St. Peter, by St. Leffer—Satanella ° lv Major George's eh c Seahorse, by Nelson— Moonga > — °iv Major George's b c The Labourer, 'by The Workman—Sister Agnes.... 810 Messrs R. and R. Booth's eh g Blue Cap, by Muskapeer—Jennie 8 5 The form displayed by Rosella of late has been of such a. brilliant character that she should have little difficulty in placing this race to her credit also. Miss Delaval, I hear, got through her trial all right this week, and she has come on ever, since Mr Hoagland withdrew her teeth. In that case she should play a part in the contest. Of the others I like Seahorse best, but to make a straightout selection my vote goes to Rosella. EASTER HANDICAP OF 500 soys. One mile, st lb st ib Douglas 9 9*Picklock 7 6 Rex 8 12 Blueiacket 7 6 Waioronsomai 8 8 Firefly 7 3 Red Lancer.... 8" 6 Mantle . 7 3 St. Gordon 8 5 Regulus.... 7 2 Battleaxe S 5 Dayntree 7 1 AdmiralHawke 8 .1 Doctor 7 0 Crusoe.... 8 0 Hylas 7 0 Oineo 712 Auld Reekie.... 610 Coronet 7 11 Roxana 6 7 St. Ursula 7 7 ♦Including 51b penalty. This is the big event of the day, and it must be agreed on all sides that it bears a- very open appearance, showing that Mr Evett has. got off a good bit of work. Douglas, the top weight, has done very little since his arrival at Ellerslie, but I looked over him yesterday afternoon and could find no fault in his condition — in fact, he looked trained to the hour. His recent .wins' in the Wang-anui, Eawke's Bay, and Napier Park Cups are full of' merit, and demonstrate that he is something above the ordinary. Some opine that the distance is too short for the son of CrawfordPriory, but I think this is a mistake, and he must certainly have a great chance of pulling off the prize. Rex has a stone and six pounds more to carry than when he triumphed last year! However, nothing has done better work at Ellerslie than the good-looking St. Leger gelding, and I am prepared to predict that he will be a sure place-getter. Waiorongomai has run some good races over a mile course, and last year she got second to Rex, carrying Bst. slb, which was a rattling good performance. On the second day she came out and defeated • St. Paul over a mile and a quarter. Since the last autumn period she has ; won two races over a mile course, and her latest gallops at headqiiarters show that she has not lost.her form of last season. Waiorongomai must take a power of beating from the best engaged. Red Lancer on his besu form would have excellent prospects, hut he has been moving very sore in his work, and for that reason I will .pass him. St. Gordon, I consider, is over-weighted. On figures Battleaxe is absolutely the pick of the handicap. This horse" has demonstrated that he can run a mile in fast time, and from what I can gather his running at the West Coast meetings recently showed that he is a much improved horse since he ran at the A.R.C. Summer Meeting. At the local gathering alone he gave race-goers a fair sample of what he is capable of. Battleaxe came under my notice yes- " terday afternoon, when he was out ior walking exercise, and I thought ■■ that he bore a well-trained appearonce. I should say that Admiral Hawke is the best outsider in the race, and if a surprise is m store he may be the one to effect it. Crusoe is an unlikely starter. Oingo, the Hawke's Bay Guineas winner, is a very fast customer, but I think that he'would be suited better .with a little shorter distance. Coronet is Buch an uncertain customer that j. pass him, and St. Ursula will find the opposition too good.- Picklock and Blueiacket are favourably handicapped, "but both are uncertain oustom- • ers. and further, I think they -will find the mile traversed in faster time than they like. Of the others the North Shore trained Doctor is the only one who appears to possess a chance. • All things considered my place selections will be — BATTLEAXE I " waiorongomai i rex; H 'HURDLE RACE of 12550v9.
