This afternoon, Captain Giovello of the Italian warship Etna, accompanied by Mr A. Rose, Consul, paid an official visit to Mr D. Goldie (Mayor of Auckland), and the Town Clerk, Mr»P. A. Philips. The distinguished visitor was shown over the Free Library and Art Gallery and expressed very great surprise at the numerous valuable manuscripts donated by Sir George Grey. He was very pleased with the excellence of the Free Library. The Mayor will return the visit to-morrow at eleven a.m. Captain Giovello leaves for Sydney on Monday, but if the weather be favourable a trip to Waitakerei Falls will be arranged before his departure.
