WRECK OF THE PEDANA

THE CREW REACH SINGAPORE

News has been received in Sydney of the loss of the steamer Perdana while on a voyage to Pahang. The vessel left Singapore on December- 24, and all went well until she was off Kuala Pahang. In attempting to cross the bar she struck, owing, it is believed, to shoaling up, due to heavy gales in the China Sea. AH efforts to break away from the grip the bar had of the steamer failed, and the 35 men comprising the crew and passengers took refuge in the rigging, the steamer's boats having been swept away in fragments by the towering seas which swept her decks as she lay broadside on the bar. The fires were quickly put out, the engine room and stokehold within half an hour being full of water. After an all night experience of desperate anxiety spent in the rigging a landing was effected by lifelines, and the 'boatswain's chair' was run from the mainmast to a cliff. Captain Hendry and the officers, passengers, and crew reached Singapore by the steamer Lady Longden.
