MATCH AT HOBART

A cricket match. New Zealand v. South Tasmania, .began to-day. Sims and Ashbolt stood out of the New j Zealand team. Cobcroft won the toss, ' and elected to bat. The wicket was ! wonderfully fast. The visiting- team I played a splendid innings for 335, the j score being as follows:— i Reese, b Maxwell 1 j Baker, c McAllen, b Eadv 81 G. Extras 13 Total 335 With the score at 78 Eady bowled George Mills with a shooter. His 29 included three fours, two threes, and 11 singles. Baker gave a sharp chance at the wicket, which McAllen snapped i up. The Dunedin man batted three hours, and played the fast bowling with consummate ease, and rendered invaluable assistance to his side by taking the sting out of the bowling. He never played a finer innings. His score was composed of twelve fours, five twos, and 23 singles. At twenty minutes to three Cobcroft dragged Burn on. He gave a fine exhibition of patient play, combined with sound defence, with not a semblance of chance. His score includes eight fours, five threes, six twos. At 261 Fisher was given out leg before to Burn. At 291 Boxshall was caught behind the wickets, and with five more runs a_ded Downes was caught on the boundary. Frankish, hitting vigorously, carried the score to 332. At 335 Lusk was beaten by Eady. The Hawke's Bay man opened badly, giving two easy chances, but when once fairly set he played a splendid game. His cutting and driving were particularly brilliant. He contributed eleven fours, three threes, and seven twos. With three:quanters of an hour to play Tasmania sent Burn and McAllen to face the bowling of Upham and Frankish. Both batted with great freedom. The captain's cutting was faultless. The score mounted rapidly, j and Fisher, Downes and Reese were ' tried in rapid succession. At 6S Boxshall took McAllen smartly behind the wickets. At 72 Burn snicked Downes into ,§lips into the safe hands of Frankish. All the men bowled a good length, and the fielding left nothing to be desired. The attendance was oniy moderate. The New South Wales Cricket Association, has recommended the Selection Committee to include some of the colts who have not taken part in intercolonial matches this season in the team to play against Neytf Zealand. United B. on Saturday Marshall increased his score to 252 (not out). The innings closed for 609 runs, a record for the colony. The annual match between representatives of the Thames aoid the Ohinemuri Cricket Associations was played at Parawai (Thames) on Saturday. The visitors proved far too good for the local team, winning by 90 runs. Thames scored 91 and 108, against Ohinemuri's 181. For the latter the chief scorers were: Butler.69, Lewis 47, Moresby 24; whilst for Thames Darrow scored 32 and 17, Carter 19, Pratt 22. Johnson bowled best for Ohinemuri, securing 5 wickets for 35 runs, and 3 wickets for 13 runs, lypr Thaimes Den court took 4 wickets for 61 runs. After the match the visitors were entertained at the Pacific Hotel, the evening being wound up with a successful smoking concert, Host Woodward being in grand form as a vocalist. The visitors returned to Paeroa on Sunday morning.

The following will play for City Cricket Club in the match with Auckland C.C. on the Domain to-morrow (Wednesday) afternoon: Messrs Whelan, Snedden, Hopkins, Winn, Holden, Copeland, Sayers, Court (2), Frost and Thomson.

Newton v. Excelsior. —Newton first innings 31 runs. Bowling for Excelsior Tattersall took 7 wickets for 15 runs. Excelsior first innings 81 runs; Tattersall 16, Wilson 11, Saunders 21. Excelsior won by 50 runs on the first innings.
