DEVONPORT WATER SUPPLY.

At the meeting of the Devonport Borough Council held last night the Waterworks Engineer forwarded his annual report. This stated that the total amount pumped during last year was 36,241,500 gallons, as against 33,138,500 for the previous year, an increase of 3,103,000 gallons. The average daily consumption per head was 321 gallons. The lake is now at the same level as at midwinter, and last year during this month it was 16 inches lower. The report stated that all attempts to recover the body of the late Mr Tracey Hall had failed. Several residents of the Lake district had rendered valuable aid, and the officers of the Tauranga had kindly lent assitance, while a considerable sum had been expended by the Borough Council, Nothing further could be done except watching for the body when it rose to the surface.

Mr M. Niceo] said the fatality showed the necessity for 4he Council having more complete control over the lake. He considered that special legislation should be passed next session.

Mr Entrican said the general Act prevented the pollution of water.supply.

Mr Niccol said the question was whether having, caused pollution. It was dQiibtfiil if the lake was part of the waterworks. Mr' Mays said -that as the lake was ' np't constructed by the Council it could not be held under the present Act to be part of the waterworks.

It was agreed on the motion of Mr Niccol to discuss the matter fully at the next meeting.
