Mrs F. Scherff's boarding house, 'Glenalvon.' in Syinonds-st., was en-, tered by burglars early yesterday morning. Some clothing belonging to one of the boarders was removed from his room and the pockets ransacked, a watch and chain, about 30/ in cash, a quartz pendant, and a pre^ sip.tation match box being stolen. The clumsiness of one of the burglars prevented further pillaging. He trod upon the cat in the darkness, and pussy's remonstrance was loud | enough to rouse one of the boarders from his slumbers, a fact which caused the burglars to decamp. By the s.s. Mamari Mr Thos. Weeks, of Gisborne, received a, valuable importation of poultry from England. These consisted of a trio of singlecomb black Orpingtons from the yards of Mr Partington, the well known English breeder of Orpingtons. The cock was a first prize winner at Blackpool, and of the hens one was placed first at no less than four poultry shows in the Old Country, including the Royal Agricultural Show. There is also a trio of Indian Runner ducks in the same shipment, the drake being bred by Mr Hunter, and the ducks by Mrs Good, of Yorkshire, and are the progeny of winning birds at the great Birmingham Poultry Show. Tnese birds were all selected for Mr Weeks by Mr B. L. Ellis, late of Levin, Wellington, well known while in the colony as a "breeder of Orpingtons, i The poultry did not. look at their best I on arrival in Auckland, being in full! moult at the timo, but we learn they are picking up condition very fast since, and Mr Weeks thinks the Runner ducks are much superior in quality to his old stock.
