§| AN AMERICAN PROTEST.
SHANGHAI, January 8.
' China has accorded satisfaction for the recent ill treatment of a German missionary at Shantung. The American Government has protested against the exclusive extension of French territory in Shanghai, and urges that foreign settlements be enlarged on an international basis.
