A scare has been created here by the rumour of a case of leprosy in a Chinese den in the suburbs. The report is not confirmed. Mr J. Whiteley King, recently engaged, in journalism in New South Wales, is on a visit to Wellington. Owing to the resignation of Captain Kemsley, the Fire Brigade Committee recommend advertising inviting applications for the position to the 23rd January, at a.salary of .£250 and free quarters, age not exceeding forty-five. The City Council adopted the stringent regulations relating to buildings, hotels, and boarding-house lire escapes, etc. The City Surveyor is to inspect and approve of all plans, and may require any portion to be constructed of different materials by special methods of construction and appliances ensuring tbe safety of chimneys, fire-places, flues, etc. The City Council passed severe regulation preventing the desecration of the Sabbath in places of amusement. Mr I. C Hannah, who was promoted from the position of manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company in Wellington to that of Inspector of the Company, left for Auckland yesterday after an absence of two years from the colony, during which time he has visit,ed the Company's branches in various parts of the world. He came from the Cape on tile last trip of the Ruahine, and on arriving at Hobart he was ordered to bed owing to ill-health. He Was laid up there for it fortnight, and lie is still far from well. The Agent-General has forwarded to the Victoria College. Council the testimonials and applications of one hundred applicants,, for the professorial vacancies. In addition there are forty-or fifty aplicants in Australia, and New Zealand. These will be considered by the Council between the fourth and eleventh January. The Minister of Lands and Mr Ritchie, Secretary for Agriculture, went South on Wednesday. Mr Carroll proceeds to Gisoorne tonight. The Minister for Justice will spend the Christmas season in Auckland, probably visiting- Masterton en route. Air Cadman is expected to remain in Auckland until March. After the holidays the Premier will visit the West Coast.
